President Criticizes Six-Week Abortion Ban in Iowa

U.S. President Joe Biden

United States: On Friday, President Biden took his time to come out and denounce the actions of the Iowa Supreme Court for retaining the law on abortion ban for the next six weeks, stating that his move endangers women’s lives.

Iowa Supreme Court Ruling

The ruling was 4-3, and the court reversed the lower court’s emergency suspension of the state’s six-week abortion restriction, stating that the restriction is Constitutional, as reported by The Hills.

The decision on Friday enables the law, which proclaims that abortions are prohibited when the heartbeat of a fetus is detectable, to go to the Iowa state’s implementation. However, there are a few exceptions for rape and incest if the victim decides to report it to the police or the health care provider within a given period of time.

Biden’s Statement

In a statement, Biden mentioned that abortion is now banned in Iowa, making it the 22nd state that has enforced a ban since the Supreme Court’s ruling in the case of Dobbs, adding that the bans are enacted by the Republican government.

“This should never happen in America,” Biden said. “Yet, this is exactly what is happening in states across the country since the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. And it’s not stopping at the state level — Republican elected officials in Congress have proposed four national abortion bans while refusing to protect nationwide access to IVF and contraception.”

Call for Legislative Action

The president also renewed her demand for Congress to pass legislation codifying Roe v. Wade; it is a bill that would be swiftly rejected in the Republican-controlled House and face a very slim likelihood of passage in the Senate, as reported by The Hills.

He also urged Democrats to ‘remain strong and united against attempts by Republican leaders to threaten the civil liberties of Americans. ’
